I bought  my first Burman , a Pro 502, around January 1979.
I had read the reviews in Beat Instrumental (May & December 1978) and thought, ‘I must try one of them!’

I have used this amp ever since.

Ok, I’ve had other amps. I bought several amps with channel switching etc. but soon ditched them. They never measured up in the tone department.
My old 502 has been the benchmark for all other amps.

Not long after I got my 502, Gregg Burman started using Gold Lion KT77 valves in the power stage.
The Gold Lion KT77 had a greater output than the standard GEC KT77.
So Burman used this to up the 50 watt amps to 70 watts and the 100 watt amps to 140 watts.
I think he also added more in the midrange. Gregg might let us know about that!

I have always liked the sound and response of the pre Gold Lion amps. My good friend Paul Kenny bought one of the Gold Lion 502s and thought it was fantastic; Another friend, Fast Eddie Myers, picked up a second hand early 502, with a serial number very close to my old 502.
It took me a number of years to persuade him to part with it.

I have also acquired a Gold Lion 502 (Part owned by Paul), a GX3  preamp and a Gold Lion 501 which has been made into a head and covered with tan, leather-look material (not by me). It also has chicken head knobs.
I am now in hot pursuit of a Pro 400 Bass head.

Over the years, I’ve had chats on the phone with Gregg Burman (he’s a nice guy by the way!) and learnt many things about his amps and the company.
Maybe Gregg might let us in on some of the production details, ie. Who made the speakers?
I believe I remember Gregg telling me the red ones were Goodmans.  (Old British make of speaker)

Many thanks to Keith 'Mad Dog' Matthews for helping maintain my amps over the years.

As you can guess, I love these amps. They are quite simply The Bizz! I hope you like the site and if I can help you with anything, please ask away!!
